Audrey Covert, the student
First off, my name is Audrey Covert, I’m 11 years old (2006) and I live on Bainbridge Island, Washington in the USA. I go to Hyla Middle School. Along with my parents and my sister, Emma, I live with 4 cats, Chester, Wilson, Rose, and Jet, and 20 fish. Interestingly my maternal grandfather grew up in Indonesia when it was still the Dutch East Indies before moving to Holland and then, later on, to the USA.
My whole idea started when Ms. Mendoza told us about the bombing. She said that children had been left as orphans and with parents in the hospital. A few weeks later while we were debating where to send the money we were to raise, I raised my hand and asked if we should send it to you (though I didn’t know who “you” were at the time) to help the children of Bali. In the end the class voted unanimously to send half the money to you and the other half to Ometepe.
In the future I hope to be able to visit you and to help raise the rest of the needed money. I also hope that the children we have helped will be able to live well the rest of their lives.
