As a part of YKIP/YKIDS’s commitment to providing best services to the families of the Bali bombing victims, we conducted a three-day visit to East Java, started from 11th to 13th August 2009. This was the second visit to Java since the new YKIP/YKIDS’s FAO administered the program.

The 2009 Java Site visit aimed to monitor the children’s performance at school, to do the school payments for the KIDS’s children, and to monitor the latest condition of the immediate families of the children.

On the first and second day, we visited the three families, Nurlaila’s, Soniyah’s and Oryza’s. They live in Banyuwangi regency. Nurlaila and her children, Hendy, Ayu P, and Fendy. They were very happy to come to Bali for the KIDS Gathering Party in last June. Hendy and Fendy got special prizes due to their performance at school. Besides doing some school payments for Hendy and Fendy at their schools, we also discussed with the children for their performance monitoring.

Due to the changing of Hendy’s goal, Hendy decided to change his major at the university, from political degree to law degree. After six months studying at the university and doing some observations and discussions with his seniors, he finally wanted to be a lawyer or a professional worker in the law area.

On the other side, Fendy’s performance was not as good as the one he got in the first semester. He got second rank at in the first semester, while in the second semester he got seventh rank. It was caused by his physical condition and his hobby in soccer. He loved spending more time in playing soccer instead in studying at home. This also caused him sick for some times so that he could not attend the school.

Ayu P reported good performance on both academic and non-academic. She did not ranked in her class but she showed good report card result for the last semester. In addition, she was also pointed to be board member of the student’s organization at her school. Even though she’s very busy with this new responsibility she keeps giving her focus on her academic performance by keep studying hard. She even keeps being able to take extracurricular in Karate.

As Soniyah does not live in Banyuwangi (she lives in Kalimantan), her children, Lucky and Devi are risen up by her parents in low. Lucky has just started his new years in the senior high school. He was accepted to study at one of best schools in Banyuwangi. He’s very happy with this achievement. In addition, he also started his extracurricular in music at this school. Devi is studying on the sixth grade of elementary school. Besides studying hard for the national exam preparation, Devi keeps continuing her extracurricular in dance and marching band. She was pointed to represent her school for some marching band and dancing performance.

Oryza lives with her grandmother only after left behind by her mother because of the bomb while his father lives in Bali. However, Oryza never met his father after the death of his mother. Oryza is preparing for the junior high school national exam that will be taken next year. He hopes that he would pass this exam. At this time, we also gave him the special prizes from the KIDS Gathering as he did not come to the gathering. He became one of best students for junior high school.

The visit was continued to visit Erna and her son, Zuhri in Mojokerto. Her injured husband, Sabri lives in Lombok and is still dealing with his mental problem due to his brain condition after the bomb. Zuhri is studying in the grade two of elementary school now. He is very happy with the birthday prizes and the school supplies we gave. Besides studying formally at school, Zuhri is taking private tutorial to enhance his performance in academic and he is also taking tutorial in ngaji (reading Muslim’s book).

Chusnul Chotimah and her sons, Mushofa and Mufthi lives in Sidoarjo. Besides doing the school payments for Mushofa and Mufthi at their schools, senior high school and university, we also discussed about Chusnul’s plan to take further surgery for her left leg. The surgery will be taken placed in the public hospital in Sidoarjo on the 5th of October this year.

The last visit was Zuniar’s family in Situbondo. We met Hafidz and gave him the school supplies for this year. He’s studying on the ninth semester of the university and hopes to finish his degree on Physical Education on next semester.
