STORY OF TUMINI

  • 2015/03/23

Coming from an underprivileged family encouraged Tumini to be a strong woman who has never given up fighting to reach her dream of seeing her beloved daughter, Dewi Yuliani getting better education. Her husband died when Dewi was three years old, which forced her to look for work in Denpasar and leave Dewi to be looked after by her parents in her native village in North Bali. While Tumini was working as a nanny in Denpasar, Dewi lived with her grandparents until she finished second grade.

On the day of the bomb blast in Kuta in 2002, Tumini was with her friend and they were passing by Paddys Club on the way home. She was injured by the bomb and had two major skin operations. The first operation took place in Sanglah Hospital and the second one in Perth, Australia. Due to the bomb, she was forced to rest for two years without being able to work. It was quite fortunate that so many people gave their hands out for her. Tumini was heard to say that she never stopped giving thanks to God because of His mercy through these generous people.

Now it has been six years after the bomb. The only thing she is concerned about is her daughter’s education. She thanks God for the KIDS scholarship that has enabled her daughter to get a better education up to this moment. However, according to her, Dewi has been struggling at school for quite a long time due to her being traumatized by the death of her father and her mother’s injuries from the bomb.

Before moving to Denpasar, Dewi was quite a good student in her school. She had above average grades in her class. However, she became so depressed when she heard her mother got injured because of the bomb. This influenced her motivation to keep studying and she has had to repeat both grades three and four. Her mother took her to a psychiatrist to help the healing process; it took one year to make her better. She gradually recovered from her trauma and can now follow her classes normally. Dewi is in grade six at this moment (2008). She will take the national exam in June next year. She is really nervous about whether or not she can pass her exam. KIDS is paying for extra tutorials so she can ace her exams; she is doing quite well now!
