Tutoring program in Tulikup

23 October 2023

Aligned with its mission, Yayasan Kemanusiaan Ibu Pertiwi (YKIP) continues to provide education support for children from low-income families in Bali. Thanks to the continued support that we receive, this year we managed to extend the impact of our program by providing home-based tutors for children in Tulikup.

In April 2023, YKIP in collaboration with the Social Welfare Department of Gianyar Regency, responded to a report regarding the situation of four children in Tulikup village. At the ages of five or six, most children will learn to name the letters in the alphabet. Some children will also learn to spell and write the letters in his or her name. However, this is so unfortunate to know that these children in Tulikup village don’t even have the chance to learn how to read and write. Moreover, three of them are of primary school age and are supposed to be in school, but unfortunately, they are not.

In YKIP, we believe that all children are entitled to a quality basic education. Recognizing this entitlement, we then started the tutoring program for these four children that focused on letter and numeric recognition. This program also aimed to prepare the children before entering primary school, including introducing them to positive learning experiences.

This program ran for 4 months from April to August 2023, where the teacher came twice a week to the children’s house in Tulikup village. We also provided basic teaching tools such as textbooks, a whiteboard, pens, and pencils to support the learning process.

We are delighted to share with you that now the children have been registered at school and have shown good progress in basic words and numbers. Better late than never!

Finally, we would like to thank all parties who have contributed to this tutoring program. Thank you Ibu Sri for her patience and effort in teaching the children. Thank you to the Social Welfare Department of Gianyar and GN-OTA Gianyar for the great collaboration.
