Medals in Taekwondo: A Story from the KEMBALI Scholarship Program

30 January 2025

Many YKIP-sponsored students pursue their passions in arts or sports, often starting at a young age and dedicating years to perfecting their skills. Marni’s story, a YKIP-sponsored student from Bangli, is unique. She discovered her love for Taekwondo in grade 11, and within just one year, she was already competing and winning medals.

Marni first encountered Taekwondo at a socialisation event hosted by a local dojang at her school. Intrigued by the sport, she sought advice from a friend who had practised Taekwondo since childhood but had taken a break for several years. Inspired by her friend’s story, Marni decided to join her school’s Taekwondo extracurricular activities. A few weeks later, she visited a dojang to observe the practice, and soon after, both she and her friend enrolled together.

Participating in the Taekwondo Competitions

I trained really hard from the beginning, and it was tough, but I was determined,” Marni shared. “I was thrilled when, after just three months, I got the opportunity to compete in a championship. To my surprise, I won the gold medal in my very first competition!”

Competing in Taekwondo championships has always been an incredible experience for me,” Marni added. “Before each competition, we attend a training camp where the sessions are intense and draining, with long hours that really push your limits. But those exercises are essential for improving technique and building strength for the competition. Despite the rigorous training, there’s always some doubt when facing an opponent. I can’t help but wonder who they are, how advanced their techniques will be, and how strong they are. It always makes me nervous. Thankfully, I have a supportive coach who constantly reminds me to stay confident.”

Recognising her leadership skills, Marni’s coach appointed her team captain of Bangli Regency’s Taekwondo contingent at the PORSENI (Students Sport and Arts Week) Bali in June 2024. In this prestigious event, Marni secured an impressive third place in the women’s over 63 kg category.

It’s hard work to be a Taekwondo athlete, but I love every part of it,” Marni shared. “Through competitions, I’ve met many new friends and learned so much from watching other athletes. Even though we compete fiercely in the arena, we become close friends once the competition is over. Thank you, YKIP, for giving me the opportunity to continue my education and be a part of this incredible sport!”

We are thrilled to see students in our KEMBALI Scholarship Program pursuing their passions and achieving success in their chosen fields. Thank you for supporting YKIP and our scholarship programs. For more information about the KEMBALI Scholarship Program, please follow this link.
