Taking the opportunity to continue her studies in F&B Services for one year unexpectedly led Setia, a scholarship recipient from Gianyar to an unforgettable experience. She and her campus classmates had a chance to visit a local winery. It was an exciting adventure that left a lasting impression on her, and she was happy to share her story with us:
“I chose a one-year training program in food and beverage services. At first, I thought it would only focus on delivering excellent guest service, but I soon realised we also need to understand the food and beverages we serve. It’s truly fascinating, and I am always eager to learn more. In November, I had the chance to visit a winery and gain firsthand experience in the winemaking process.”
Learning More about Wine
“The winery staff welcomed us warmly and guided us through the vineyard. Seeing grapes up close was amazing. During the tour, the staff explained the intricate process of winemaking. We learned that the wine colour depends on the grape type and that winemaking is no easy task. The winemaker must carefully tend to the grapes to ensure they are of the right quality for wine production. Grape variety, location, climate, and harvest timing are critical to wine’s quality. Harvesting too early or late affects sugar and acidity levels, influencing taste. Pests, weather, and disease can also impact outcomes.
Fermenting the grape juice is also a challenging task. Yeast type, temperature, and timing must be carefully controlled to produce high-quality wine—a single mistake can alter the taste, resulting in a wine that is too sweet, too sour, or even ruined due to contamination by microorganisms.
Before leaving, we had the chance to taste some of the wines. I tried red, rosé, and white wines. Although I had learned much about wine from books, tasting it firsthand was a completely different experience. It brought everything I’d learned to life.
The visit broadened my perspective. When you truly understand what you’re serving, it makes you more confident in your work. I’m so grateful for this unforgettable experience.”
Setia is currently on job training at a five-star hotel in Jimbaran, where she puts the knowledge she gained on campus into practice. Let’s wish her a smooth and successful training experience as she takes this exciting next step in her journey!
